A&M-SA staff supports our veterans in D.C.

On February 12, President Obama signed the Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for American Veterans (SAV) Act into law at a signing ceremony inside the White House. Richard Delgado Jr., A&M-SA director of Military Community Development, was present to witness the signing as he represented Texas as the San Antonio Squad Leader for the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA). The legislation was spearheaded by IAVA and is named after Marine sniper Clay Hunt from Texas, who died by suicide in 2011.

The Clay Hunt SAV Act, which passed unanimously in both the House and Senate, will increase capacity and access to mental health care at VA to meet demands, improve the quality of care, boost accountability at VA, and develop a community support system for veterans. This legislation will also get more mental health professionals into VA so they can start helping veterans like Clay with their invisible injuries.

Richard was also on stage at the IAVA SAV Act Reception at the Willard Hotel after the signing ceremony where Paul Rieckhoff, IAVA founder and CEO, Robert McDonald, secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs, and Susan and Richard Selke, parents of Clay Hunt, delivered remarks on the importance of the bill. Richard had the opportunity to reconnect with the VA secretary and talk about the great work we are doing here at A&M-SA for our military community students, including the Patriots' Casa.
